Why Exercise Matters for Girls on the Autism Spectrum
I've talked a lot about the benefits of exercise and autism in general, but I haven’t specifically addressed why physical activity is particularly important for girls on the autism spectrum. Let’s dive into that.

Dopamine Chasing and Gender Differences
When we think about autism and physical exercise, dopamine chasing comes to mind. Everyone, autistic or not, seeks dopamine hits. Boys often gravitate toward extreme sports and high-intensity activities, which provide substantial dopamine boosts. This is partly because the male brain tends to be less cautious, making them more inclined to engage in risky sports.
Girls, on the other hand, often lean towards intellectual pursuits like business and finance, where they can leverage their typically stronger intellectual capabilities. This means girls might miss out on the dopamine rush that comes from physical activity.
Healthy Dopamine Sources
Chasing dopamine through healthy activities like exercise, rather than through addictive behaviors or harmful substances, can lead to a more fulfilling life. For girls on the autism spectrum, incorporating regular physical exercise into their routines can be incredibly beneficial.

Recommended Activities
I highly recommend activities like walking, running, or working out at least two or three times a week. This not only provides a healthy source of dopamine but also helps build proprioception.
The Role of Proprioception
Proprioception is the awareness of the position and movement of your body. For people on the autism spectrum, sensory processing disorders can make spatial awareness and muscle coordination challenging. Engaging in physical activities helps develop proprioception, improving spatial awareness and overall sensory integration.
Conclusion
Incorporating regular physical exercise into the lives of girls on the autism spectrum can lead to numerous benefits, including healthy dopamine regulation and improved proprioception. This holistic approach to well-being can significantly enhance their quality of life.
