Autism and ADHD: A Fascinating Combination
Autism and ADHD is a fascinating combination, and this crossover is prevalent among girls as well. Historically, the autism diagnosis criteria were skewed towards males, which is absurd. Thankfully, this has changed, and now females are also recognized on the autism spectrum. Interestingly, most females with an autism diagnosis also have ADHD.

The Overlap of Autism and ADHD in Girls
The overlap between autism and ADHD in girls is significant. Many girls who are diagnosed with autism likely had an ADHD diagnosis first. This is because the symptoms of ADHD can be quite similar to those of autism. Here's how the connection manifests:
1. Hyperfocus: Girls with both autism and ADHD often exhibit a high level of hyperfocus. They might become intensely interested in a particular topic and spend a lot of time learning about it. For example, they might obsess over ancient Egypt or become deeply involved in writing a book.
2. Task Switching: While autism might cause someone to hyperfocus, ADHD can lead to frequent task switching. After completing one task, they might quickly move on to another interest, such as going from writing a book to becoming an Olympic-level swimmer.

3. Cognitive Dissonance: The combination of autism and ADHD creates a challenging scenario where the mind wants to focus deeply on one thing but also craves constant change. This cognitive dissonance can be overwhelming but is manageable with the right strategies.
The Fluid Nature of Autism and ADHD
In my opinion, autism and ADHD are highly fluid and often come together. While diagnostic criteria might separate the two, many people experience both conditions simultaneously. This belief is based on personal experience and observation, even though official diagnoses might differ.
