Hyperlexia And Autism: Why Your Two Year Old Can Read (SHOCK)

This is why your child can read exceptionally well! It’s called Hyperlexia! So what is hyperlexia? It is simple the ability to read far beyond your reading age, like a 4 year old reading books for teenagers. Hyperlexia and autism come hand in hand but! Hyperlexia is a rare condition, so it isn’t within every autistic person. It is actually possible to have a diagnosis of just hyperlexia without it being co-occurring in autism, but this again is very rare. It is so commonly linked within autism that a study (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S014976341630639X) showed that 84% of children with hyperlexia were on the autism spectrum. It is a fascinating condition and leads many to wonder if their child is just a gifted child or on the autism spectrum. Some signs of hyperlexia include: 1.Signs of a developmental disorder As the children with hyperlexia are able to read really well, they will show other issues in development like learning to speak, etc. They could even be non-verbal. 2.Affinity for books Children with hyperlexia will have a huge affinity for books and reading for obvious reasons. 3.Ability to learn quickly Children with hyperlexia will be able to learn to read quickly without much teaching involved.
